Bacardi Rum & Salt Water in San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan, Puerto Rico
The island of Puerto Rico isn't techically a foreign country, but it is a world away from the typical weekend vacation to Florida. The main city on this great island is San Juan, which is a heady mix of heat, food, rum and Latin beats.

Tours

One of the best ways to see the city is to take a tour. As well as walking tours (Legends of Puerto Rico will take you through Old San Juan and the colorful markets in San Juan proper), there are underwater and on-water varieties as well: Aquatica is a jet ski pirate tour that takes visitors around the bay (clear blue warm water) to pick out the best sights on the foreshore, while Sea Trek San Juan offers visitors the chance to descend a ladder into the ocean wearing an old-style diving helmet. Almost as good as a short scuba tour, without the need for a diving license.

Yes, it's a tourist trap, but don't miss the Bacardi Rum tour. You'll only get two (watery) drink samples and the bottles in the gift shop are overpriced, but the fun of seeing how this legendary drink is made, and the entertaining guides who really love their job make it worth it.

Places to See

The other must-see in San Juan is the Old City. Old San Juan (with or without a tour guide) is a maze of alleys and cobbled streets, filled with sixteenth century colonial architecture. This is the oldest settlement within US dominion and the loving restoration has resulted in a one mile-square UNESCO listed  trip back in time. During the day, Old San Juan is the best place for cafes, art galleries and shopping, while the night-time sees the town light up with nightclubs, theaters and restaurants packed with locals and visitors.

Beaches

The beaches of Puerto Rico are world-famous, but some of the best ones are to be found off the beaten path. Just off Puerto Rico, on the island of Culebra is Flamenco Beach, rated one of the ten best beaches in the world. You can get here easily by ferry, but as Puerto Rico's public transport system leaves something to be desired, it's a smart move to hire a car if you want to explore.

Outdoor Activities

Back on the main island, a little way out of San Juan is El Yunque Caribbean National Rainforest. As well as spectacular scenery, there are trails for all levels of hiking experience, and a well-resourced information center as well as a strong Park Ranger service (no chance of being lost and forgotten out here).

The nearby town of Luquillo is not only packed with beautiful beaches and food kiosks (try the Pigs Feet and Coco Frio), it is almost deserted during the day and virtually no tourists ever venture here. You'll attract a few looks, but if you can handle the scrutiny this pretty town is the best place to go for easy access to a little of the 'real' Puerto Rico.

Hotels

Although San Juan is a popular vacation destination, hotel prices are fairly reasonable. Budget travelers can pick up a room in a three star hotel for around $60 per night while those who prefer something a little more luxurious should be prepared to spend between $100 and $130 per night for a twin-share or double room.
