Capital Sites in Washington DC

Washington DC

Although you can't visit Washington without visiting the Smithsonian Institute and Arlington Cemetery and wandering around the National Mall, there really is more to see than just a first glance suggests.

Things to See and Do

For the better-known spots, a show at the Kennedy Center is a must. This is one of the best live venues around and no matter who or what you see here, the experience is amazing. Don't try to see the entire Smithsonian – get a map and plan ahead a little instead – but do leave time for an IMAX movie. It's one of the best theaters in existence for the larger-than-life format.

Start your weekend with a morning at the Eastern Farmers market, a hectic and lively open-air locals market in Capitol Hill. Here is where the more quirky folk can be found, juggling or haggling over the price of vegetables. It's a long way from the hallowed halls of power, with nary a suit in sight.

Off the Beaten Path

One odd attraction, that may not be all that attractive, depending on your tastes, is the Wheaton Metro Station in Washington DC. It's claim to fame is that it has the longest uninterrupted escalator in the Western Hemisphere, with an uneventful ride spanning 230 feet. Well hey, some people are into that sort of thing.  For something else a bit oddball, but a little more interesting, go to the International Spy Museum. It's kind of like a giant version of all the sleuthing toys you wish you had when you were a kid, along with a pretty comprehensive history of spying in general. A nice insight into the political nuances of years past. Though this may not be able to hold the attention of younger kids.

Dining

The Dupont Circle is probably the most interesting neighborhood in Washington. An eclectic mix of galleries, cafes, bookstores and retail shops, every local will have their favorite spot here. For the best Greek food, try the quaintly named Rosemary's Thyme Bistro (1801 18th St NW). Cheap, perfectly flavored tastes of the Mediterranean, with half price wine and (oddly) margarita's for groups – or just if they like you.

Nightlife

After dinner, with a belly full of those margarita's, dancing is probably sounding like a good idea. Madam's Organ Blues Bar is the perfect combination of dingy lighting with high-talent live acts. Blues, roots and bluegrass will keep even the most tired toes tapping. Adams Morgan is not a place, but a neighborhood. It is home to the biggest cultural mix in the state, and it is fun with a capital 'F.' Latino food, culture, food and dancing is authentic and lively – with bars staying open until late (or early, depending on when you finish your night).

Hotels

Hotels in Washington tend to be of a good standard, especially as the last ten years have seen a concerted effort to clean up the city's less-than-desirable reputation. Taking advantage of online specials will get a room in the Grand Hyatt for a shade under a hundred dollars a night (sleeps two or three), while average prices are between $180 - $270 per night. Self-catering apartments for longer holidays are around $80 per night for a one-bedroom.
