Chocolate, Civil War and Amish in Harrisburg, PA

cheap hotels in harrisburg, pennsylvania
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is an eclectic mix of contradictions. From the deeply historical Civil War and Pennsylvania Dutch to the progressive music, art and industry, Harrisburg is an intriguing blend. Despite the juxtaposition of past, present and future, Harrisburg is an easy place to be.

There is sense of ease in this city, and the fact that it is a jumping off point for some of Pennsylvania's best attractions doesn't hurt either. This is also a town that loves its festivals, so major events are easy to find. One of the highlights is the 2010 Easter Celebration, complete with full-scale egg hunt. Perhaps not one of the most cultured events, or the most exciting, but definitely the one with the widest appeal for the young, and young at heart.

Getting Around

Getting in and around Harrisburg is surprisingly easy, considering its relatively small size. There is an international airport nearby, and an extensive highway and freeway system. The heart of Harrisburg is extremely pedestrian-friendly, encouraging the ambling promenades that seem custom-built to relax locals and visitors in the warm summer evenings.

Things to See and Do

The State Capitol Building (on 3rd St) is definitely worth including on the itinerary, even if history and architecture aren't usually your bag. The unusual European design of the facade is almost decadent, with columns, murals and statues everywhere. Inside, the Chamber of the House of Representatives is so lavishly decorated that it's tempting to switch to a career in politics. Almost. Tours of the building are available, but taking a quick look around is usually ample.

The National Civil War Museum is, surprisingly, the only one in the country dedicated solely to this particular conflict. The Museum curators have done a great job of diplomatically representing both sides, and as well as the usual photographs and relics, there are reconstructed scenes depicting a typical soldier's campsite, a field hospital and a battle or two. It's all done brilliantly and will even keep the smaller members of the group well-engaged.

Events

If you are visiting Harrisburg around Easter, be sure to head to the Easter celebrations. This year the Egg Hunt (the highlight of the festivities) will be held on March 27th – or April 3rd in case of rain – and although adults aren't really allowed to help the kids, no-one will release the hounds if you are inspired to 'give a little moral support.' The day ends with a mass picnic on the common, complete with live music and the tang of grilling meat and onions in the air.

Off the Beaten Path

Although not strictly in Harrisburg proper, there are two detours that should be mandatory. The first is Hershey – the town synonymous with the fabulous and famous chocolate of the same name. Hershey's Chocolate World (800 Park Blvd, Hershey) is educational (the entire chocolate-making process is demonstrated) as well as delicious. The price of entry includes free samples at different points throughout the tour.

The second detour is off the beaten path in Amish Country. The Pennsylvania Dutch are not actually Dutch at all (it's a mispronunciation of Deutsch, meaning German) and the German dialect they speak is completely unique in the world. Although their communities are not meant to be tourist attractions (how would you like car-loads of gawkers outside your house), there are enough points of contact to get an understanding of these unique folk: Tours are available, either as a general introduction or on specific topics like quilt-making, and weekend accommodation packages are very popular – especially with honeymooners. It's advisable to take a tour rather than simply drive aimlessly around. Not only does this support the local population, it also eliminates the risk of annoying anyone by accidentally stumbling into their backyard.

Hotels

Hotels in Harrisburg are pretty inexpensive. A great double room will set you back no more than $100 per night, in a central location within walking distance to all the usual attractions as well as the cheap eats downtown.
