Getting Your Groove Back in Providence, RI

Providence, RI

Providence is the capital city of the US state of Rhode Island. Despite the name, Rhode Island is not an island at all, however the pleasures of Providence are often focused around the river networks and sea.

Culture

When it comes to culture, Providence is a gentler version of San Francisco. Thanks to its past as, first, a Puritan settlement and, later, an epicenter of organized crime, Providence has a colorful and eclectic mix of diversions. It's New England positioning provides a balance though, and the peaceful nature of this part of the US can be felt in almost every part of Providence daily life. Crime is low, fun is well-regarded and the population tends to be welcoming and friendly.

Things to See and Do

There is plenty to see and do in Providence. From the historical and sedate monuments and streetscapes of the Natural History Museum (1000 Elmwood Ave), Art Museum at the Rhode Island School of Design (224 Benefit Street ), Benefit St, College Hill, and Federal Hill (all with lush green gardens and 19th century residential architecture) to the more modern and quirky Foo Fest (a street party packed with entertainment for all ages and a bargain at only $5 a ticket – 15 August 2010) or Providence Sound Session (a week-long decadent indulgence in every genre of music imaginable - 5th - 11th July), there is something for everyone in Providence.

Live Music

For any-time great live music, rather than yearly events, head to Lupos at the Strand (79 Washington Street) where acts like De La Soul have been keeping the crowd happy for over 20 years. Alternatively, The Century Lounge (5 Elbow Street) has a good atmosphere and often showcases up and coming local acts.

Off the Beaten Path

It's not hard to get off the beaten path in Providence – the whole city has that kind of feel to it. Ever seen a Russian submarine? Head to the outskirts of the city, near the docks by the electrical power plant and you'll be able to gape at one in the flesh. There is a guided tour if you would like to know exactly what brings a piece of Communist war machinery to Providence, or you can simply accept it as just another surreal slice of Providence.

Block Island

Block Island is, unlike Rhode Island, a real island. About 12 miles off the coast of Rhode Island and accessible only by ferry, this peaceful slice of old-world New England is a hikers delight. Moors, ponds (365 of them in fact), wildlife refuges (five in total) and quaint hotels with gingerbread-style decorative touches, Block Island is a perfect weekend retreat.

Hotels

Accommodation in Providence is varied, but the budget options are great value. Hotels like Dolce Villa are basic but comfortable (internet is included in the price) and in the middle of Providence, with rooms beginning from $60 a night.
