Keeping a Progressive Pace in Portland, OR

Portland, Oregon

Portland, Oregon is one of the most vibrant, progressive, and independent-minded cities in the United States of America. The creative flavor of this northwestern city is presented in the form of innumerable, unique dining establishments, ample parks, microbreweries, interesting museums, and outdoor events.

Museums

The logging industry has played such a prominent role in Portland’s history that the city boasts a museum called the “World Forestry Center Discovery Museum”. Visitors to this one of a kind museum won’t find themselves staring at massive tree stumps or looking at dusty sculptures of commercial tree species. Instead, they should expect to learn all about logging through interactive displays such as a harnessed lift into a simulated forest canopy, a simulated ride through river rapids, educational exhibits of forest wildlife, and video displays of forestry activities throughout the world.

Another fun and educational museum to visit is the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (the OMSI).  Much larger than the Forestry Discovery Center, this is a fantastic venue for kids and anyone who loves to learn about science and technology. There is a different featured exhibit every few months, and there are permanent, interactive displays of life science, chemistry, paleontology, and other science-related themes. A “retired” submarine that was used in the Pacific Ocean by the U.S. military is also on display and is open for tours.

Places to See

The mild, humid climate of Portland, Oregon is excellent for cultivating a wide variety of plants and locals have taken advantage of this by planting and maintaining several public gardens. The International Rose Test Garden, Berry Botanical Garden, and Portland Japanese Garden are all beautiful places to go for a relaxing stroll but the Lan Su Chinese Garden is particularly impressive. The authentic Chinese architecture of the structures and garden design (everything from rocks to roof tiles were handcrafted in Suzhou, China) will make visitors feel as if they have been transplanted through time and space into medieval China.

Things to Do

Visitors to Portland who need a break from browsing through art galleries, conversing over rich coffee, and sampling some of the city’s excellent food will find adventure in the form of the Outrageous Jet Boat Ride. This speedy boat ride takes its passengers on unforgettable trips as it zips around the Willamette and Colombia Rivers.

People who find the Outrageous Jet Boat Ride a little too exciting can still see the river in a gentler, more romantic fashion by dining out on the Portland Spirit. Lunch and dinner are served on this dining ship that slowly cruises along the Willamette River to give its patrons beautiful views of the Portland skyline as they enjoy delicious food and drink.

For a view of the Portland skyline and surrounding forests from above, the Pittock Mansion is a museum that sits 1,000 feet above the city in the West Hills area. This huge, one hundred year old house is Portland’s very own castle. Visitors will be rewarded with beautiful views and numerous exhibits related to the history of this exciting city.

Hotels in Portland

Portland has well over on hundred options for accommodation. Most are located in one of two areas; near the airport or along the Willamette River. There aren’t many options for budget travelers but the small and pleasant Nordic Motel might fit the bill ($62-$78). Moderately-priced lodging is more common; the Shilo Inn Suites near the airport being a popular choice ($76-$104). Travelers to Portland looking for luxury may find what they are looking for at The Nines ($162-$250).
