Off the Beaten Path in Helena, MT

Helena, Montana

Helena, Montana, is not on the usual tourist itineraries. Like most Montana towns, it is small, and lacks the obvious attractions of the Glacier National Park. Nonetheless, it's off-the-beaten-path appeal can be a pleasant diversion and pit-stop for those passing through to other parts of the state.

Things to See and Do

Driving into Helena can give a less-than-wonderful first impression. Although this town has it's fair share of historical highlights, the outskirts are more functional, with the typical malls and fast-food joints that seem to characterize middle America. A bit of exploring can yield fast rewards though, with the Capitol and its surrounds offering scenic spots to stroll, relax and soak up a gentler pace of life. The trick is to get off the Interstate – just don't try this if an RV is involved, as Helena's roads are ill-equipped to cope with these behemoths of the road.

Outdoor Activities

Nature lovers traveling through Montana will often head straight for the larger and better known State National Parks, but Helena is worth a visit: As well as the hiking trails winding through the pristine scenery of the 620 dedicated acres around Mt Helena (Hogback and the 1905 trail both lead to the summit) there is a boat tour of the nearby river canyon for a scenic exploration of the natural delights of Helena.

Events

As with so many other Montana towns, the events in Helena tend towards the country-type. The annual Helena Fair and Rodeo (July 8 – 15, 2010) is a week-long festival that is aimed predominantly at families (although there are plenty of night-time events for adults to let their hair down). Releasing the inner cowboy can be a lot of fun, especially with the country-prices of beer and barbecue. Each night of the weekend is rodeo time, with thousands of locals turning out to support their favorites, or just to soak up the atmosphere.

Off the Beaten Path

As the whole of Helena is basically off the beaten path, it can be tricky to ferret out 'hidden secrets.' The Great Northern Carousel is not exactly a well-kept secret, but it is worth a look. Hand-carved in 2002, this enormous carousel features animals from the Northern region and is part entertainment and part Dali-esque wildlife monument. Apple-picking is also featured prominently in Helena's attractions. The idea is that you pay a nominal fee and receive a bucket with which to pick your own apples. Paying to be a farm-hand may not seem like great entertainment, but there really is no taste like a fresh apple. Bluewater Orchard (1088 Bridger-Fromberg Backroad) and Boja Farm (157 Hergenrider Rd) are the best options. Back in town is the Old Montana Prison – a creepy reminder of turn-of-the-century justice. As well as a guided tour, you can also stop by for the weekly musical events, held during the summer. Touted as a true 'captive audience event' the acoustics of the old jail are surprisingly well-suited to live music and the beer and wine flows freely.

Hotels

Accommodation in Helena tends towards the simple, clean and efficient. There are a couple of Bed & Breakfast style options, but the easiest and least expensive are the Americana-style motels: Around $40 per room per night.
