If a thrill-a-minute is your idea of a good vacation, then you're in the wrong town. Bismarck, North Dakota is a great place to enjoy the more sedate and wholesome pursuits that the US has to offer. Hiking, swimming, historical snippets of the cowboy era, and dinner on the Riverboat – these are the kinds of leisurely pursuits to be found in North Dakota's State Capital.
Events-wise, the most exciting thing to happen in 2010 will probably be the Quilt Til You Drop festival in March. Perhaps not the most exciting event, but the point is that Bismarck is the ideal place for a laid-back and inexpensive family getaway, rather than a non-stop rush.
Things to See and Do
Bismarck has a high proportion of young families and retired folk calling it home. Aptly, the major attractions are either targeted at families or history-focused. The North Dakota Heritage Center (612 East Blvd Ave)is a well-maintained first point of call, with a surprisingly wide array of exhibits and information for visitors. The Native American history of the region is much more richly and lovingly documented, unlike other parts of the US, and can offer plenty of new information on the previous inhabitants.
Despite being the tallest building in the state, the State Capitol Building really doesn't have much going for it. Completed in 1934 after the original was destroyed by fire, the inside has some lovely Deco elements, but essentially reflects the austerity of the Depression (and the building budget of the times).
To round out the historical tour of Bismarck, head to the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame. Again, don't expect too much. For a start, the Hall of Fame is actually in Medora, which is a couple of hours west of Bismarck proper. Although this is a bit of a hike, it positions the Hall right in the middle of the Badlands, which is pretty fitting. Inside, the exhibits document the cowboy domination of the Wild West and rodeo features pretty heavily too. It's a good place to kill and hour or two if you're in the area – but probably not a special trip unless cowboys really get your blood pumping.
Outdoor Attractions
If you're not keen on swimming, fishing or boating (the Missouri River is a huge part of Bismarck's leisure scene), the Lewis and Clark Riverboat offers a gentle cruise up the river, with a meal included if you are so inclined. Book ahead, as this is the only service of its kind in Bismarck. The Riverboat leaves from the Port of Bismarck on North River Road and it may not be exciting, but it is definitely one of the most relaxing ways to wile away an afternoon.
Events
The Annual Quilt til You Drop festivities are designed to coincide with National Quilt Day. Kicking off at the Bismarck Heritage Center, there is a plethora of quilting displays, exhibitions and historical ambles through the wild world of quilt-making. All events are free and open to the public, except for the quilt-making lessons and workshops which need to be booked in advance. Amazingly, this event draws large crowds so be prepared for some queuing.
Hotels
Hotels in Bismarck are almost embarrassingly inexpensive. A double room or suite in a modern hotel (with jacuzzi and indoor heated pool), often with breakfast thrown in for free will average around $75 per night. These are usually within about 5 minutes walk of downtown Bismarck, close to all attractions and facilities.
